Key Points:
1. Caused by a virus.
2. Transmitted by mosquitoes.
3. No direct human to human transmission.
4. All tropical parts of world, both urban and rural.
5. Year-round transmission, but rainy season increases mosquito breeding.
Signs and Symptoms:
i. High fever (3-7 days).
ii. Intense headache.
iii. Painful joints and muscles.
iv. Pain behind eyes.
v. Often a rash (may appear as fever reduces).
vi. Dangerous complications can occur - hemorrhagic or shock syndrome.
vii. Bleeding under skin, gums, nose, or in vomit.
Day-time biting.
1. Breeding in HUMAN-MADE containers with clean water.
2. Prevention by Environmental Cleanup of Breeding Containers:
3. Old tyres.
4. Dispose, cover, or fill with earth.
5. Water storage (tanks, drums, jars, overhead tanks, coolers).
6. Cover to keep out mosquitoes (can use rustproof mesh or screen).
7. Add Abate® (temephos) to kill larvae in the water.
8. Small containers and garbage - clean up / bury / burn.
9. Tins, bottles, coconut shells, garbage, anything that collects water.
10. Cooler and drip-pans, flower pots, animal water dish, ant traps, etc.
11. Empty water every week, both indoors and outdoors.

There is no vaccination for this deadly disease but certain programs are going on and it is hoped that soon we will listen a good new in this regard. Thus only the most effective method of protecting us from this disease is Mosquito control.
In urban areas, Aedes mosquitos breed on water collections in artificial containers such as plastic cups, used tires, broken bottles, flower pots, etc. Periodic draining or removal of containers is the most effective way of reducing the breeding grounds for mosquitos.
Prevention of mosquito bites is another way of preventing disease. This can be achieved by using insect repellent, mosquito traps or mosquito nets.
In USA a scheme was introduced to encourage children to place a water bug, the crustacean Mesocyclops, in water tanks and discarded containers where the Aedes aegypti mosquito was known to thrive. This method is viewed as being more cost-effective and more environmentally friendly than pesticides, though not as effective, and requires the continuing participation of the community.
In 2004, scientists from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, discovered a fast way to find and count mosquito population inside urban areas. The technology, named Intelligent Monitoring of Dengue (in Portuguese), uses traps with kairomones that capture Aedes pregnant females, and upload insect counts with a combination of cell phone, GPS and internet technology. The result is a complete map of the mosquitoes in urban areas, updated in real time and accessible remotely, that can inform control methodologies.[26] The technology was recognized with a Tech Museum Award in 2006

Dengue Fever
Dengue fever is a disease that is spread by a special kind of mosquitoe, which is found in clean water. After having been bitten by mosquitoes which carry the dangue poison, a period of three to six days elapses before the disease develops. The attack s usually sudden. There is first a feeling of chilliness, following by severe pain in some parts of the body, such as the limbs, back or head. There is always a splitting headache, most server in the frontal regio and back of the eyes. The eyes become red and watery. The temperature rises rapidly from 103 to 105 degree Fohrenheit. There is no appetite. Nausea and vomiting are not uncommon. In children, conulsions and delirium are common. One the third day the temperature usually falls, accompanied by profuse perspiration, the passage of much urine and sometimes violent diarhea. After this the patient feels well for a day or two, then the pain come on again, and the temperature comes up. A rash may appear on the arms, trunk and legs. This second rise of temperature usually lasts but a short time, and then goes down to normal.
A dengue fever patient should be kept in bed and protected ay and night by a mosquito-net to prevent mosquitoes from bitting him and tramitting the disease to others. Restrict the dient to rice-greul, soft-boiled eggs and fruit. At the outset, give a dose of castor-oil or Epsom salts. Apply cold cloths or ice to the head to releive the headache. Give the patient cool bioled water and fruit juices or lemonade to drink. Apply formentations to the painful parts.
To prevent the disease, it is only necessary to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. This can be done by covering your clean water bowls.
Formentations:-
Select a piece of blanket or flannel large enought to fit over the chest or back. Fold it into a pack, dip it in very hot water, and wring it out as dry as possible. Wrap this in a dry towel, or other material thick enough to protect the skin, and apply the whole pack to the area to be treated. This is know as a formentation.
Leave the hot pack in place for ten or fifteen minutes, or until it is cool. Then rub the area with a small piece of ice or a cold cloth and dry the skin with a rough Turkish towel. The pack, or formention, may be reapplied several times, as desired. Follow this wth some massage or heavy rubbng. While treating the patient wth a chest cold, first apply the formentation to the back, and then latertreat the chest. At the end of this treatment, wipe the skin dry and apply some soothing lotion.
